about

I believe this is my most commercial track yet (So, still not very commercial at all). I wasn't trying to make it sound commercial, but I was trying to make it sound upbeat (uplifting). I'm not sure I succeeded, you can let me know if you please. I called it “Solar Powered” because I made it in the spring, just when the days where starting to get longer and I was getting a boost of energy from having more sunlight.

When I started coming up with ideas for this track on my OP-1 Synth (Teenage Engineering), Electric Guitar and my trusty old Korg Volca Bass, I liked what I was coming up with so much, I decided NOT to do a live Youtube video, like I have been doing for the past few months. Instead, I went back to something I am more used to, and that is working with my DAW (Digital Audio Work station). That meant that I could record all the bits I liked, then place them around the song as I pleased (It's all a cut and paste thing at that point) For those wondering what DAW I'm using, well it's SONAR from Cakewalk. I have the “Artist” version, which is an affordable version, yet still so powerful I don't think I will ever be stopped by its limitations.

I really tried to surprise myself (and the listener) with this one. I broke all the rules (most of these rules I've placed upon myself with no external influences) Rules like: A song must have a “chorus” or a “bridge” or a “hook” Why? Some of the other things a song has to have (still, in my mind) “A bass line” or a “melody” Screw all that. I decided I wouldn't bother with any of those rules on this track. (Although in this case, the track does indeed have a bass line)

The name of the game for this track is patience. As a producer, I told myself: “never mind finishing the track as fast as possible. Let it happen. There are no deadlines. It HAS to be fun. Fun to work on, fun to listen to. It will be finished when it is finished.” It took me around 6 weeks to complete.
